Description
Opium pods come from a flowering plant called papaver somniferum. They are a natural product (poppy plant). Depending on how the plant was picked and where it came from, the pods coats of unwashed opium may have more Schedule II opium alkaloids like morphine, codeine, and thebaine than those of washed opium pods. The opium pods themselves do not contain any opium. Instead, the opium alkaloids, like morphine, codeine, and thebaine, are found in the poppy latex, which is a milky white fluid that comes out of the pod when it is cut. If the harvesters want the poppy seed coats to have more opium alkaloids, they make cuts in the opium pods before they are fully ripe. This lets the latex seep onto the seed coats. People who want to get the opium alkaloid content out of opium pods that haven’t been washed can use the seeds to make a tea that has enough alkaloids to make them feel high.
